This richly illustrated talk about changes to the land and water of the Seacoast region from the Little Ice Age to the present, raises questions about history, stewardship and the future quality of life in this place we call home. Professor Jeff Bolster is the editor of Cross-Grained and Wily Waters: A Guide to the Piscataqua Maritime Region, and author of several other books and many articles.

  • Mindful Eating with Susan Engle, Thursday, Sept. 16, 6:30 pm
Do you eat while reading, watching TV, or driving? If you do, you are like most Americans today. Eating while multitasking often leads to over eating. Mindfulness means "pure awareness", accepting the moment without judgment or criticism. How often do you let yourself enjoy your food in this way? Food is food, it is neither good nor bad. But we insist on giving these labels to foods and feel "guilty" eating certain foods. Mindful eating is about slowing down and being super aware of what you are doing. Are you eating out of habit? Are you letting yourself choose food that is satisfying? It is not realistic to eat this way all the time, but practicing mindful eating will help you get in touch with your own inner eating expert. Come discuss and experience mindful eating with Susan Engle, registered dietitian and nutritionist.

  • Knitting for Beginners, 10:30 – 11:30 am on Tuesdays Sept. 28 - Oct 26,
Have you always wanted to learn to knit? Did you know once but need a refresher course? Then come join our beginners knitting class and start knitting! Sign-ups are required - 8 person limit. This class is for adults age 18 and up.

Notes from the Children’s Room:

From Miss Jan:
  • Sign-up sheets for elementary-aged programs are available at the Youth Circulation Desk.~ Feel free to pick up the September/October Children’s Room calendar outlining all upcoming programming including Baby Lapsits and Storytimes, which start up the week of October 4.~ The September side of the calendar includes some fun activities to do with your children at the library and at home.~ Sign-up sheets and handouts for the “Make a Difference Club” (K-5th) will be available next week, since we’ve been in contact with different organizations needing our help and wanted to be sure we had all the details available for parents before signing up their kids.~ Additional information for all children’s activities can also be found by clicking on “Library Events” on our web site at http://library.strathamnh.gov.~

  • Library Strategic Planning Survey:
Every few years, the Library Board of Trustees and the staff work together on a strategic plan to guide the library's policies, budgeting and decision-making. ~These plans require public input, thoughtful consideration of Stratham today and its library needs, and a proactive outlook. ~
We're asking you to tell us what you think will be the most important library service areas (i.e. different types of things that libraries do for their communities) for the Wiggin Memorial Library over the next few years (and where we should be putting our resources!). ~Fill out our survey here http://library.strathamnh.gov/Pages/StrathamLibrary_Info/stratplan#surveys and let us know what you think. ~Or, print a copy to turn in at the library.
